Raymond Bernard’s 1932 adaptation of the novel Les croix de bois by Roland Dorgelès (1919) had a cast of veterans and was filmed on location in the Champagne. Before its general release to critical and popular acclaim in France and abroad, the film had been screened before the League of Nations, the 39th Infantry and the French President – making it one of the influential cinematic responses to World War One produced in the interwar years.
