‘Beyond the Sphere of Grief’: English Partsongs and Motets of the Great War
School of Music Project Choir, University of Leeds, directed by Clive McClelland
Click here for a live recording of the Project Choir’s recital of unaccompanied English choral music associated with the period of the First World War. The programme includes Edward Elgar’s Five Partsongs, Opp 71-3, and motets from Hubert Parry’s ‘Songs of Farewell’, as well as pieces by Gustav Holst, Herbert Howells, Ernest Farrar and Charles Wood.
The latter two composers have a Leeds connection: Farrar went to Leeds Grammar School, and from 1912 was organist at Christ Church, Harrogate, and Wood received an honorary doctorate from Leeds University in 1904.
