Morley Centenary, A ‘Leeds Stories of the Great War’ partner
On 29th January 2014 staff and students attached to Legacies of War took part in a ‘roadshow’ style event hosted by Morley’s Centenary Committee. As part of Leeds Stories of the Great War the University has built a partnership with Morley Town events manager, the local councillors and committee.
The local community were asked to bring objects, artefacts and stories related to the First World War, to share them and take them home with a better understanding of how they fit into the First World War’s wider context.
Academics Alison Fell and Ingrid Sharp were inundated with people wanting to know more about objects and stories from their parents and friends. They worked alongside partners from Leeds Museums and Galleries, Morley Community Archives, the British Legion and other local organisations to answer people’s questions and give a greater understanding of the context surrounding their First World War objects and stories.

The contributions were also recorded thanks to the University contributing the services of an object photographer and a group of trained undergraduates to record interviews with people that attended the event. It is hoped that eventually, outcomes of any further research will be made publicly available at the Morley Community Archives and through digital resources.
Our next project with the Morley Community will be a workshop delivered by the Leeds Museums and Galleries’ Preservative Party teaching people how to use and contribute to their ‘WW1 Leeds’ Facebook timeline
Working collaboratively with the Morley Community will continue throughout the centenary period. They have been successful in their HLF bid under the ‘Then and Now’ scheme which will assist their delivery of events in 2014. Beyond the Leeds Stories of the Great War project, Ingrid Sharp and Alison Fell will continue to work with the Morley community to add value to the First World War projects they are undertaking.
