Summary of the First Leeds Stories of the Great War group meeting
First Leeds Stories of the Great War group meeting – 13 August 2013
On 13 August participants from across the different groups working on Leeds Stories of the Great War were invited to an event held at Leeds Central Library.
The aim of the event was; to inform participants about the other strands of the project, to motivate participants to start asking questions and trying to find answers, to give participants opportunity to meet other participants with different skills and experiences.
Nearly 30 people came and nearly every group was represented:
Tetley Stories of the Great War The University of Leeds in the Great War
Belgian Refugees in Leeds in the Great War
Stories for Monologues with Urban Sprawl
Groups who were unable to attend were:
Seacroft Stories of the Great War
Morley Stories of the Great War
We started the morning with an introduction to the project by the Principal Investigator Alison Fell, a video will be available soon, check back for a link.
Then we did an activity designed to familiarise people with the different topics being covered by the different groups working on Leeds Stories of the Great War.

Following this Cate Walker (Project Officer Libraries, Arts and Heritage) and Helen Langwick (Partnership Coordinator Leeds Museums and Galleries) presented their ideas for the citywide plans for Centenary Commemoration. They invited people to come to an event on 4th September at Leeds City Museum, details here: Seminar Invitation and here: Yorkshire + WW1 – Delegate info a video of their presentations will be available soon, check back for a link.
We then had a well -deserved coffee break before taking part in a team activity designed to enable people to think about what they would like to gain from participating in the project as well as what they can bring to the project. This was finished off with groups presenting their draft “Mission Statements” and filling in a postcard with individual ambitions for the project and concerns.
Findings from the activities will be collated and summarised and will then be available on the website.
